The effects of the sun in the workplace
The Greenhouse Effect. In summer all working environments
including factories, offices and warehouses can
become too hot to work in as the midday sun streams
unhindered through glass windows and rooflights.
This heat is captured and adds to the heat generated
by equipment. It is not only factories that generate
heat because the equipment in an average office
generates 3,000 watts of heat (approximately 3
bars on an electric heater).
The Problem of Glare
The Sun's glare is another
major problem and one which causes problems all
year round. With an ever increasing number of
people working at VDUs, glare can be the root
cause behind many work-related illnesses and absenteeism.
For those working in critical situations such
as in a care environment or with potentially dangerous
equipment, there is a clear risk presented by
the combination of VDU glare and excessive heat.
