Heat and accidents
A number of research studies have been undertaken on how workplace temperatures relate to incidence of accidents.

  • A study by Vernon showed accident rates in temperature zones are lowest at 20¼C (68¼F) increasing by more than 30% at 24¼C (75.2¼F).
  • A separate study by Vernon showed that the relative accident frequency increased with temperature by up to 40% for older men in the 22¼C to 30¼C (71.6¼F to 86¼F).
  • The graph shows how industrial accidents are more prevalent during the hot summer months reinforcing research by Bedford. The research also showed a direct correlation between the reduction in output and the incidence of accidents.
  • A paper produced by Peter Jackman of The Building Services Research and Information Association concluded that accidents at work increase when the temperature is above 24¼C.
  • In the hot summer of 1997 the TUC called for action against excessive heat in the workplace as people suffered from heat-stroke, dehydration and exhaustion.
